Проведены многочисленные исследования, направленные на поиск механизмов, с помощью которых микробные сообщества желудочно-кишечного, дыхательного тактов и прочих локусов функционально связаны с процессами метаболизма человека. Сейчас пришло понимание того, что микробиом играет важную и уникальную роль в здоровье и болезни человека. Предпринимаются шаги, направленные на регулирование процессов, происходящих в микробных сообществах.
